***************Review*****************
Three years
ago, I wrote a review extolling the performance of the Douglas DXF 5wt. After
40 years of fly-fishing I thought I had found the one rod, at an affordable
price, that suited my preferences, fishing with dry flies, nymphs and small
wets to fish seen. Then the new Gen 2 was released. Did I need another 5
weight? Could there be a genuine improvement on the original DXF when that rod
scored within 5% of the winning Douglas Sky G in the 2020 Yellowstone Anglers
5wt shootout? Short answer to both question, yes! Not long after my new rod
arrived, I was on the water testing it. The Gen 2 is a fraction lighter in both
actual weight and swing weight than the older DXF, but overall it has a
definite lighter feel in the hand. I have a better feel of the rod loading on
the back cast. I’m producing tighter loops. I have more control of the
presentation. I can easily punch a fly into a 20-25 km/h wind and still get a
good roll over. Short, middle, long casts are all easy. Yet, the Gen 2 has
enough backbone to handle a 4 lb brown trout. I was always impressed how I
could pick up the line with the DXF and with one back cast shoot out a longish
cast to a cruising fish. That’s even easier with the Gen 2. The original DXF is
a great rod. I still love it, but the Gen 2 is a definite step up.
